Monk Tomato#

Seed Source: VM09

Indet. 220-340g+ Pink, oblate. Potato leaf. 70-80 days.

Plant grows to a height of around 1.2m.

Flavour is very good - a soft, sweet and fruity flavour that does not compete well with other strong flavours, so not a great sandwich tomato. Excellent as a salad tomato, and will probably work well as a cooking tomato, provided it is not mixed in with other, more acidic varieties which may dominate.

Yield has not been impressive, but mainly due to a sever pruning by Bushbuck in late Dec, and very poor rainfall through Jan contributing to slow recovery. Nevertheless, disease and drought resistance has been quite good, and plants are now yielding what they can, despite almost complete neglect.

Once again one of the earliest Tomatoes to get going. Currently plants are about knee-high; very healthy, deep-green leaves. Largely self-supporting up to now, so I have hopes that it might be lower maintenance (for support, anyway) than most. First flowers are forming. Was one of the fastest varieties to start in seed-trays.

Monk suffered a setback - severe "pruning" by Bushbuck a month or so ago. No decent rain in the past month has not helped any. Still, some fruit - still green - and plants look healthy and vigorous.

Monk is the earliest of the Tomatoes, with 2 true leaves; seedlings are approx 3cm tall and ready for transplant today -- 42 days. Looks like potato-leaves.
