The local landrace (is it?) of Chantenay -- strong, large, conical, orange Carrots with excellent flavour. My guess would be that they were brought here by the French Huguenots in the 18th century or thereabouts, and adapted to dryer conditions. Or perhaps some seedsman had a meshugas that a more South African name would help to sell more of them. I can't imagine why you'd want more Carrots than you really need, but there no accounting for the weirdnesses of marketing people. We have had them succumb to unnamed soil fungi -- some sort of white-rot fungus, but that's rare.
